charles atlas' ocean at walker tonight

There's a benefit screening tonight at the Walker, where they're hosting the world premiere of the performance film Ocean.  The movie documents a 2008 dance piece of the same name, created by the late Merce Cunningham, dancer and popular avant-garde choreographer.  14 years after its initial premiere, the Merce Cunningham Dance Company staged this particular showing within Minnesota's Rainbow Quarry.  Tickets to this event cost $30, with the proceeds tonight going to the Cunningham Dance Foundation's Legacy Plan.

Next Monday MN Film Arts welcomes filmmaker Barak Goodman to St Anthony Main to screen his academy award nominated film Scottsboro: An American Tragedy.  The screening is the first in a brand new series titled "Documenting America," which will feature monthly documentary screenings in the area. The film tells the story of 9 men in 1931 Alabama who were convicted of rape despite clear evidence proving their innocence.  The screening begins at 7pm and is free.

autumn music and movies part 2

Tonight's the second installment of Vita.mn's Autumn Music and Movies series, taking place at the Lake Harriet Band Shell.  For music entertainment we have The Twilight Hours who have chosen the French musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg to screen after their performance.  Musical isn't really an accurate description.  Just know that the film doesn't so much as contain songs as much as it has their actors sing all the dialogue.  I was entertained by it in high school.  Or maybe that was just Catherine Deneuve, I can't remember.  Show starts at 8.

Some of you might be watching the Vikings-Saints game tonight.  But others might prefer the high-brow cultural offerings from public television on a night like this.  And why wouldn't you, when TPT-2 is premiering a brand new episode of MN Original.  Here's a description of tonight's episode along with the trailer:
