mpls movie screenings: weekend of apr 1

I'm gonna spare you all the April Fool's Day madness that makes browsing the Internet nearly impossible to enjoy on this day.  I believe this is the worst day of the year for Internet junkies, but that's probably because I don't have a sense of humor.

Minneapolis' Bernhard Herrmann obsession begins in earnest with the Trylon's screening of The Man Who Knew Too Much.  I saw Hitchcock's 1934 version, and I really don't remember anything about the movie.  Maybe this Jimmy Stewart version leaves more of an impression.  Check it out at 7 or 9 this Friday and Saturday, or at 4:40 or 7 this Sunday.

Outside The Law, nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars, comes to St Anthony courtesy of the Film Society, and will be screening for two weeks starting today.  The film tells the story of a family in the middle of Algeria's fight for independence after World War II.  Seeing as revolution in the Arab world is the hot political thing these days, this movie might be of interest to a lot of folks.

The Film Society has another event going on this weekend, this time in conjunction with the UMN Department of Art.  The filmmaking team of David Siegel and Scott McGeehee will present their 2009 film Uncertainty tonight at St Anthony at 7:15.  Then on Saturday, you can catch three other films by the duo:  Suture @ 5:00, The Deep End @ 7:00, and Bee Season @ 9:15.

The MIA is showing their final medieval film this Sunday, with their 2pm screening of The Name of The Rose, the 1986 film based on the Umberto Eco novel.

Finally, The Loring's showing Sixteen Candles for their Mimosa Movies series at 2pm this Sunday.  A good popcorn/mimosa flick that will help you recover from all the April Fool's pranks and goofs.

Need more recommendations?  I'd suggest Certified Copy playing at Edina.  Kiarostami challenges notions of film more than any other director right now.  This movie is another great example of film's power to convey and conceal and keep the audience unsure of what they're watching at all times.  Every shot is brimming with information that only adds to the confusion.  This is the most provocative piece of fiction filmmaking I've seen in theaters in the past three, maybe four years.  Please check it out.
