best of the 48 hour film fest: thursday at riverview

This Thursday there will be an award presentation and screening of the best films from this year's 48 Hour Film Project at the Riverview, starting at 7pm.  For the competition, contestants had exactly 48 hours to conceive, write, produce and edit their short features.  Tomorrow night's festivities will include screenings of the ten finalists for Best Film as well as the award ceremony.  Following the show there will be an after party in the lobby and at the Riverview Wine Bar across the street.  The event costs $15.

It's back, kids.  Lemmy, the documentary on the Motorhead frontman, is playing at the Riverview one more time:

Special Encore screening: Thursday February 10th at 9:30pm, Admission is $8.

Over four decades, Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister has registered an immeasurable impact on music history. Nearly 65, he remains the living embodiment of the rock and roll lifestyle, and this feature-length documentary tells his story, one of a hard-living rock icon who continues to enjoy the life of a man half his age.

Shot on a combination of High Definition and Super 16mm film, "Lemmy" includes interviews with friends, family, bandmates past and present and such admirers/peers as Metallica, Slash, Dave Grohl (Nirvana/Foo Fighters), Ozzy Osbourne, Peter Hook (Joy Division/New Order), actor Billy Bob Thornton, wrestling superstar Triple H, Alice Cooper, Mick Jones of The Clash, and many more.

Called "pure gold" by WIRED, "Lemmy" made its world premiere in March 2010 at the South by Southwest Film and Music Festival, and has since collected rave reviews at film festivals around the globe. Variety remarked "'Lemmy' rocks," and The Hollywood Reporter noted, "You don't have to be a metalhead to love 'Lemmy.'"

What to watch this Christmas... Black Swan is starting at St Anthony today (still at the Lagoon).  True Grit is at St Anthony, The Heights & The Lagoon.  If neither of those sound like good Christmas flicks, then you probably won't want to check out the Leo Fuchs story of Jewish assimilation in American Matchmaker, also playing at St Anthony.  John Lennon fans might enjoy seeing the Twin Cities Film Fest favorite Nowhere Boy, playing at the Parkway starting this Friday (showtimes TBD).  If it's Christmas films you must watch, though, you can check out A Christmas Story and It's A Wonderful Life at Riverview until tomorrow.  Here's random showtimes:

Join us this holiday season for 2 classic Christmas films: "A Christmas Story" and "It's A Wonderful Life"!

On December 20-23, A Christmas Story will play at 4:00 and 6:00; It's A Wonderful Life will play at 8:00.

Admission for all shows will be $2 or $1 if you bring a nonperishable food item. A portion of all ticket sales will be donated to the Minnehaha food shelf.

Joan Crawford is really brilliant in this outrageous over the top William castle directed “Axe-ploitation” thriller from 1964. Written by Psycho author Robert Bloch, it tells the tale of Lucy (Joan Crawford) who twenty years earlier took an Axe and murdered her cheating husband and his mistress in a fit of rage, now she has been released from the Asylum cured. But is she, as suddenly strange and horrible things begin to happen all over again. This is a true cult camp horror classic that is not to be missed on the big screen!!! DIGITAL PRESENTATION.

The third in director Sam Raimi's stylish, comic book-like horror trilogy that began with The Evil Dead (1982), this tongue-in-cheek sequel offers equal parts sword-and-sorcery-style action, gore, and comedy. Bruce Campbell returns as the one-armed Ash, now a supermarket employee ("Shop Smart...Shop S-Mart") who is transported by the powers of a mysterious book back in time with his Oldsmobile '88 to the 14th century medieval era. Armed only with a shotgun, his high school chemistry textbook, and a chainsaw that mounts where his missing appendage once resided, the square-jawed, brutally competent Ash quickly establishes himself as a besieged kingdom's best hope against an "army of darkness" currently plaguing the land. Since the skeleton warriors have been resurrected with the aid of the Necronomicon (the same tome that can send Ash back to his own time) he agrees to face the enemy in battle. Ash also finds romance of a sort along the way with a beautiful damsel in distress, Sheila (Embeth Davidtz), and contends with his own doppelganger after mangling an important incantation.

An American scientific expedition to the frozen wastes of the Antarctic is interrupted by a group of seemingly mad Norwegians pursuing and shooting a dog. The helicopter pursuing the dog crashes leaving no explanation for the chase. During the night, the dog mutates and attacks other dogs in the cage and members of the team that investigate. The team soon realises that an alien life-form with the ability to take over other bodies is on the loose and they don't know who may already have been taken over.

This isn't so much a horror film as it is a horrible film (Hmmm, devilishly clever writing I'm sure to not regret).

Two exorcists literally remove the skeletons from the cupboards from people's homes. Some fairly embarrassing secrets are revealed along the way. A case where the skeletons have hidden themselves turns the lives of all those involved.

minneapolis project 2010 at riverview tonight

The Riverview is screening a collection of short movies about neighborhoods in Minneapolis tonight at 7pm.  The shorts were all produced specifically for the Minneapolis Project 2010, a series put together by the Cinema Revolution Society and IFP MN with the stated mission to, "exhibit a cross-section of life and stories on film, and to collectively create a cinematic portrait of Minneapolis."  Tickets are $10.

lost in woonsocket at riverview tonight

The Riverview is presenting a one-time screening of the documentary Lost In Woonsocket tonight at 7pm.  This movie comes out of the A&E reality series Random 1, where hosts John Chester and Andre Miller go across the country helping total strangers in need.  The show has been cancelled for four years, but the team has come back to help one of the strangers they came across during the taping of the show.

I've never heard of this film, but the description on the Riverview's website leads me to believe there are some interesting questions being asked in it.   The documentary seems to contain a good discussion about the effect these reality programs have on the mental and emotional state of the show's subjects. Then again, maybe it's just the story of our hosts' struggle to save two alcoholics with nothing but each other.

The movie premiered at South by Southwest and is screening tonight at Riverview at 7pm.

It's made the rounds at national film festivals, including South By Southwest, and now the locally produced thriller Four Boxes is back to screen at Riverview tonight.  This thriller follows a group of people who earn a living by selling dead people's belongings when they come across a sadistic website:

Fourboxes.tv is a dusty, digital window into the wacked-out world of a creep they call Havoc. Havoc didn't know his apartment was wired up when he moved in. And he's weird. He sleeps in a bat-cage, builds bombs in a dungeon, and looks like he's planning to kill people on a seriously massive scale. Trevor, Amber and Rob decide they have to do something to find and stop Havoc, wherever he is. Or...maybe not - they could just keep watching, 'cause, as Rob says, "That's what the internet's for."

The movie starts at 7pm.  I must say, this film looks sufficiently creepy.
