tuesday night ballet screening at the heights: Giselle

The Heights continue their monthly offers of ballet/opera showings with the 19th century French ballet Giselle:

I'm gonna be completely honest here, my film background doesn't really equip me to properly write on this production.  So like I'm want to do in these situations, I'll refer you to Wikipedia:

When the curtain rises on the first act, the cottage of Giselle and her mother Berthe is seen on one side, and opposite is seen the cottage of Duke Albrecht of Silesia, a nobleman who has disguised himself as a peasant named Loys, in order to sow a few wild oats before his marriage to Bathilde, the daughter of the Prince of Houston. Against the advice of his squire Wilfrid, Albrecht flirts with Giselle, who falls completely in love with him. Hilarion, a gamekeeper, is also in love with Giselle and warns the girl against trusting the stranger, but Giselle refuses to listen.

If you like to have entire plots spelled out for you, then by all means read the rest of the article.  If not, then I'll further attempt to entice you by saying that the play contains "Wilis, female spirits who, jilted before their wedding day, rise from their graves at night and seek revenge upon men by dancing them to death."  In case you were unsure where this story was gonna take you, maybe now you have a better idea.

It's like they say in the ballet world, "let's get dancey!"

thursday heights screening: simon & garfunkel doc

The Heights will have two showings of the Simon & Garfunkel documentary The Harmony Game, this Thursday night.  I'm having trouble finding any information about this film other than what I find on its IMDB page.  It looks like a self-released movie, with no trailer or website for me to find anywhere.  Basically what I'm saying is, this might be the best chance you have to see this movie:

THE HARMONY GAME tells the story behind Simon and Garfunkel’s last studio album – Bridge Over Troubled Water – which has its legacy shrouded in rock n’ roll mythology with legendary tales of inspiration, innovation and separation.  Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel share the journey in their own words and reflect back on its impact 40 years later.  Also featured in the documentary are several of the duo’s collaborators from the period:  Roy Halee (co-producer/engineer), Hal Blaine (drums), Joe Osborn (bass guitar), Jimmie Haskell (arranager), Mort Lewis (manager), and actor Charles Grodin, director of Songs Of America.

THE HARMONY GAME includes several scenes and clips from the controversial CBS television special Songs Of America, the candid, behind-the-scenes look at Simon & Garfunkel at work on Bridge Over Troubled Water, which aired in November 1969 and has not been available on VHS or DVD ever since.  A rarely seen time-capsule of Simon & Garfunkel’s writing process and of the late-1960s, THE HARMONY GAME is a must see event about the making of a classic.

John Huston is more famous for directing works like The Treasure of the Sierra Madre and the original film noir, The Maltese Falcon, but don't sleep on this thriller.  Bogart and Bacall may have had the marquee, but it was Claire Trevor who won the oscar for best supporting actress.  Check out Key Largo at The Heights tonight at 7:30.

Hard Boiled Bogart Noir Key Largo The Heights Mon Feb 21 7:30  (1948, John Huston, 35mm, 100m) This time, John Huston takes the reins, as Bogart and Bacall strut their stuff in this decidedly bleak drama. In the Keys to visit an old war buddy, Bogart's Frank McCloud is forced to match wits with a vicious gangster (Edward G. Robinson), who is holding his pal's hotel hostage.

Howard Hawks, Raymond Chandler, and of course Bogey and Bacall- how is The Big Sleep not the best film noir?  Maybe cause there were so many great ones, but it truly is a classic.  Peep it, and Three on a Match, tonight:

Die Walküre (The Valkyrie), WWV 86B, is the second of the four operas that form the cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung), by Richard Wagner. Die Walküre's best-known excerpt is the "Ride of the Valkyries".

What to watch this Christmas... Black Swan is starting at St Anthony today (still at the Lagoon).  True Grit is at St Anthony, The Heights & The Lagoon.  If neither of those sound like good Christmas flicks, then you probably won't want to check out the Leo Fuchs story of Jewish assimilation in American Matchmaker, also playing at St Anthony.  John Lennon fans might enjoy seeing the Twin Cities Film Fest favorite Nowhere Boy, playing at the Parkway starting this Friday (showtimes TBD).  If it's Christmas films you must watch, though, you can check out A Christmas Story and It's A Wonderful Life at Riverview until tomorrow.  Here's random showtimes:
