weekend mpls movie screenings: mar 11

There's gonna be a lot of basketball games on TV for the next few weeks, and the only escape will be to head out to the movies.  Luckily, the rest of the month promises to bring some great films to theaters near you.

The Walker brings you the second weekend in their latest retrospective, "Julian Schnabel: Artist Director." Tonight is the 2000 Venice Film Festival standout, Before Night Falls, which features a Javier Bardem as Cuban poet Reinaldo Arenas, who finds himself at odds with the government for his writing and sexuality. That's playing at 7:30 tonight, and tomorrow at 7:30 you can catch Schnabel's 2007 Oscar-nominated film, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.  Unique camerawork, including POV-style shooting, conveys the unique worldview of French Elle editor Jean-Dominique Bauby, who was paralyzed following a stroke at age 43.

Over at the Trylon, the Henry Mancini series continues with another Blake Edwards film, Experiment in Terror.  Unlike last week's screenings, this 1962 film veers more toward the dark than his Peter Sellers films did.  In the movie, a bank employee is stuck in the ultimate  thriller predicament, when she has to choose between honoring the rule of law or protecting the life of her little sister.  When put so bluntly, it seems like the choice should be an easy one, but I'm sure this picture is still a heck of a movie.  Showtimes are:

Tonight at St Anthony, The Film Society presents a free screening of the film Desert Flower.  According to their website, it's "The autobiography of a Somalian nomad circumcised at 3, sold in marriage at 13, fled from Africa to become an American supermodel and is now, at the age of 38, the UN spokeswoman against circumcision."  The film stars real life Ethiopian model Liya Kebede and the excellent Sally Hawkins.  The director was to be in attendance, but sadly had to cancel her appearance.  It only screens tonight, and, like I said earlier, it's free.
