weekend mpls movie screenings: mar 18

Good films happening, but the biggest film event's not even a screening at all.

First up, we got the Henry Mancini series continuing at the Trylon.  You might not expect a Mancini score for an Orson Welles pic, especially one as noir-ish as Touch of Evil, but you can't argue with the results.  Made 17 years after his directorial debut, Welles' tale of drug trafficking and police corruption is dark, suspenseful, gripping, entertaining and features Charlton Heston as a Mexican narcotics officer.  That's all to say that the movie has everything.  Here are the screentimes:

Touch of Evil

The Film Society has two new films opening at St Anthony tonight.  Ip Man 2 stars Donnie Yen and Sammo Hung in some Hong Kong kung-fu action.  From action films to documentaries, Winston Churchill: Walking With Destiny highlights the prime minister's time during World War II.  Showtimes for these two films are:

The Walker is showing their final film in their series "Julian Schnabel: Artist Director," the 2010 Venice Film Festival feature Miral.  The movie's kicked up some dust this past week, as the American Jewish Committee and other groups opposed the film's screening at the UN General Assembly this past Monday.  Find out what the fuss is about tonight at the Walker:

This event is SOLD OUT. An in person waitlist will start at 6:30 PM in the Bazinet lobby.

Or don't find out apparently (unless you're one of the lucky few to have already purchased a ticket).  There are tickets, however, for tomorrow night's Regis Dialogue with Julian Schnabel himself.  So even if you don't get to see Miral, you can hear about the troubles the film has experienced in the past few months, from the early negative reactions to the current UN flap.  Here's some info on the talk:
