Sorry for the lateness of this post; I was only just alerted to it by the good people at
Secrets of the City. It appears that the
MN Historical Society and
TC MediaNow will be presenting
gems from 70's and 80's local news broadcasts at the History Center tonight for free. This looks to be good, folks:
History of Hip: Your 5 O'Clock Friends
Dates: Feb. 22, 2011
Time: 7:30 to 9 p.m.
Fee: Free
Take an affectionate look back at the local news of our childhoods. Local newscasts have a way of turning up in blooper videos and parody comedy sketches: the corny jokes, the fake camaraderie of the "news teams" and the maudlin human interest stories can be endearing, if somewhat formulaic. Tom Oszman and Jack Stahlmann of TCMedianow.com present an evening that that explores those classic tropes when they were still new(s) and reflects on the careers of local TV greats like Stan Turner and Don Shelby with rare clips, outtake reels and commercials that evoke the media culture of the Twin Cities in the '70s and '80s, when local affiliates still ruled the early evening airways.
History of Hip explores the mysterious factors that confer hipness on an artist or a fad, and trace the origins of creative genres that still register with artists, audiences, and tastemakers today. Snacks provided. For more information visithttp://www.minnesotahistorycenter.org/hip.
